About Us

We work to make the process smoother, more fun, and put together better.

BD Construction grew from small-town Nebraska with a simple belief: Building in our community requires a partnership founded on honesty and genuine care. We saw a need for a construction team that wouldn’t just build structures. We want to build trust, one conversation at a time.

Who We Are

01

We're your neighbors! We're the folks you see at the local coffee shop or volunteering at the school fair. As a team of down-to-earth people from right in the heart of the Midwest, we believe in saying what we mean and meaning what we say. Plus, we'll crack a few jokes along the way, because building something we’re all proud of should be enjoyed.

What we do

02

When BD serves as your construction manager, we become your trusted advisor on all matters related to your building project with a single goal in mind: to provide you with the best value for your construction dollar.

Our History

03

BD Construction was founded in Columbus, Nebraska in 1960. In 1983, a young man named Mark Benjamin opened a satellite office in Kearney. BD Construction Inc./Kearney bloomed into a busy and successful enterprise. In 2002, Benjamin and other Kearney-based employees purchased the firm from the original owners. Today, BD Construction has numerous field crews working on a wide variety of education, healthcare, commercial, industrial, public, and agricultural projects throughout the Midwest.

Our Mission

04

When you’re ready to build something that will serve your community or your business for years to come, consider us more than just a construction company. We want to be your partner, your trusted guide, the folks who will work alongside you with honesty and expertise to bring your vision to life. We will be there for you long after your project is over. Let's talk about what you're building, and let’s build it together, with complete clarity and the shared goal of getting you the very best value, every step of the way.

Building Communities

Our work is much more than the complex projects we deliver for healthcare, education, cultural, industrial, commercial and agricultural facilities. It means giving back by supporting community success.

The BD culture fosters and encourages staff involvement in community organizations like service clubs, churches, and cultural, human service agencies and business and economic development organizations.

Through ongoing training, our team members grow in their knowledge and expertise of the industry and remain current on construction trends.

Associated General Contractors

As a leader in the construction field in the Midwest, BD Construction team members participate in the Associated General Contractors-Nebraska Building Chapter, a leading association for the commercial construction industry.

Mark Benjamin Building Opportunity Scholarship

The Mark Benjamin Building Opportunity Scholarship is granted annually in memory of former BD Construction president and CEO, Mark Benjamin. Buffalo County students with financial need can receive $1,800 toward the pursuit of construction trades at an accredited two-year trade, vocational or technology institute of higher learning in Nebraska. This scholarship is offered in conjunction with the Benjamin family, BD Construction, Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce and private donors. Scholarship guidelines and an application can be found on the Kearney Area Community Foundation website.

In Memoriam

Mark Benjamin

President and CEO | 2002-2015

An energetic and visionary leader, Mark Benjamin’s legacy of professionalism, collaboration and innovation continues to shape BD Construction today. Mark was a leader in the industry and in the Kearney community, and instilled the BD Construction culture with the character, skill and enthusiasm to exceed the expectations of everyone it encounters.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in business from Kearney State College (now the University of Nebraska at Kearney) in 1983, Mark Benjamin interviewed with BD Construction in Columbus, Neb. The founders, Gene Bierman and Bill Dreifurst, gave him a chance in commercial sales in the new office they were opening in Kearney.

Their decision paid off. In 1987, Mark was named general manager and, in 2002, he became the majority shareholder, president and CEO of BD Construction, Inc./Kearney. During his tenure, BD Construction has built, and continues to build, many notable projects including schools, banks, retail stores and industrial and healthcare facilities throughout Nebraska, Kansas and the Midwest.

Active in the industry and community, Mark served as a member of the Nebraska Building Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America and was the President of the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He also served on the Southeast Community College Building Construction Technology Advisory Council, and as a trustee (1 of 16 in the USA) for the national Associated General Contractors Legislative Affairs Committee.

Mark passed away in April 2015. His spirit lives on in the company he shaped and the family and friends who cherish his memory.

Hear it from our customers

Howard County Medical Center had been trying to promote and achieve a new lab project for at least five years. My task as the CEO of the facility was to partner with a company that understood our needs as a healthcare facility but was also aware that we needed to stay within a very strict budget. BD Construction worked with us from the very beginning to help with local infrastructure roadblocks and the onset of winter weather. Mike and Dennis led the way from the beginning and enlisted Grant as our architect. This collaboration worked perfect in getting our team on the same page and making sure we had what we needed. Once construction started, our on-site supervisor, Jeff, was there every day making sure the job was done correctly and on time. He always made sure the work site was clean and that we could do business as usual. In the end we finished on time and under budget. I will use BD for my next project and would welcome anyone that is considering using their services to call me and let me elaborate on what a GREAT job they did.

BD Construction has been fantastic in supervising this [remodel, new kitchen, wrestling practice room and gymnasium] project, completing the project on time and under budget, despite the difficulties of remodeling while school continued in the building. The project superintendent provided quality workmanship, was great to work with and communicated and worked well with our staff in solving problems as they developed. BD has represented Ord Public Schools very well throughout this project. We feel that they are part of our family and always represent us in a fair, but firm, manner.

While the financial stakes are high for both the client and business, BD always made it clear that they were there for Perkins County Schools. When construction starts, multiple contractors can be involved, each bringing their own caliber of performance. Additionally, construction always brings its own set of challenges to overcome that are often outside of anyone’s control. BD and their construction manager, were, and continue to be, an advocate for us as a client. This includes making sure that bids and pricing were in line with industry standards to ensuring that contractors complete work to specifications, and then holding those accountable who do not meet those standards. What I really appreciated about BD in the area of advocacy was that when they saw an opportunity to save dollars, either in product or a redesign, they shared this with me and I was allowed to make an informed and fiscally-responsible decision.

BD Construction has been very instrumental through all phases of our project and continues to be a valuable partner as the project moves forward. They have quality people in all areas of the project, and if you have a question, it gets answered promptly and professionally.
