The building process provided some interesting challenges for BD to overcome. With only 75% of the design complete, this project moved forward without a design professional — a notable circumstance for BD, as we deeply value collaborative partnerships with architects. Plenty of details still needed decisions, and we rolled up our sleeves. We teamed up with the owner to bring their vision to life, stepping into a more hands-on role and working through an untold number of decisions in the field.
One missing detail: how to finish drywall behind columns floating less than an inch from the wall. Our site superintendent noted the concern durin gframing, and it quickly became "the million-dollar question." Luckily, the answer didn't cost a million dollars. After a few meetings with the finishers — and a couple of clever, homemade tool tweaks — our craftsmen delivered the seamless finish you see today.
Another challenge surfaced outside the building. We constructed the storm water detention cell exactly to the civil engineer's plans. Once it was in place, however, the owner wasn't happy with how it sat on the site. Instead of debating the drawings, we brought in BD's in-house civil engineer, rethought the layout, and redesigned the cell to better fit the property. Then we rebuilt it to the new design. The result: a compliant, functional detention system that the client actually liked seeing on their land.
